From the Desert to the Snow Capped Atlas Mountains

(I am back in Germany by now and will upload the rest of my pictures of Morocco this week)

From Tafraout I joined some people to go via Ouarzazate to the desert. Our wonderful plan of taking the night bus wasn’t quite as wonderful when it started raining into the bus – but at least we weren’t expecting any rain in the desert and once the rain stopped outside I could even get some sleep. We ended up in a very nice but kitsch place in Zagora, where we had a totally stoned band playing sahrawi songs for us after dinner. The next day we went to the market and later took a bus deeper into the desert. We spent one night in Ouled Driss and went on a wonderful two day camel trek the next day. We ended the trek just a few kilometers from M’Hamid, where a music festival was taking place at the weekend. After a lot of confusion we finally found a place to stay (mattres on a hotel terrace) and wanted to go to eat and see the festival. On our way we met some local people who insisted on singing songs for us and after that insisted that we sing some German songs for them. After a while we were invited to dinner and they even offered us to sleep in their camp in the desert for free. The music festival wasn’t quite as good as we expected, so the next day we joined our new moroccan friends in the camp and stayed there for the night.

From M’Hamid we went back to Ouarzazate, where we rented a car to drive into the High Atlas for two days.  We drove over almost impassable dirt roads, ran out of gas, had to turn around on a mountain pass, because a truck got stuck in the snow half a kilometer in front of us, but we made it back to Ourzazate in one piece and suprisingly even the car survived…
